The Royal Air Force College Cranwell, RAF Cranwell short, is a military airbase of the Royal Air Force five kilometers north-west of Sleaford in Lincolnshire, England. The RAF College is the school officer of the Royal Air Force, the base is one of the oldest in the RAF.

History

After a year of preparation, the Royal Naval Air Service Training Establishment Cranwell was opened in the spring of 1916, that with the founding of the Royal Air Force in 1918 to RAF Cranwell was. After the war was here in the 1920s, among other things, TE Lawrence, better known as " Lawrence of Arabia", stationed.

Sir Frank Whittle was stationed in the late 1920s in RAF Cranwell. Here he formulated the basic ideas for the jet propulsion, and 1941 took place in Cranwell by the Gloster E.28/39 the first flight of a British jet aircraft instead. After his death in 1996 his ashes were interred in the church RAF Cranwell. (see also Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain )

Cranwell training school was all RAF officer cadets and also the entire flight training took place here in the first decades of the existence of the training center. Only with the extension of the training of two to three years from 1960, in which also an academic degree could be acquired, the Advanced Training has been moved to other airports, such as RAF Valley, only the basic training on Jet Provost remained in Cranwell.

Current usage

Currently (2012 ) use the following RAF Cranwell Schlungseinrichtungen:

  • Royal Air Force College ( RAFC ), the Officer School of the RAF and thus the equivalent of the Military Academy Sandhurst the British Army
  • Headquarters of the Central Flying School ( CFS)
  • 115th Reserve Squadron, equipped with a tutor for the basic training, is the 1st Elementary Flying Training School ( EFTS )
  • 45 Reserve Squadron, equipped with King Air for the " multi - engined " training, is the 3rd Flying Training School ( FTS)

There are also some other services.
