History of the Museum

The museum was founded in 1927 and was initially housed in one of the main building of the Dutch Railways in Utrecht. The collection consisted mainly of pictures and documents. In the 1930s, developed the first attempts to obtain valuable historic railway equipment. But in the war was a part of this material is lost again.

After the museum was temporarily housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, it was able to return in the 1950s back to Utrecht. The closed in 1939 Maliebaanstation station seemed to be an excellent place for the museum. After a renovation, the museum was able to open its doors in 1954. There was now a lot more space to present to the audience the collection of historical material and could be issued. Until 2003, the long series of historic steam locomotives was along the first platform of the most eye-catching part of the collection.

Extensions and conversions

Over the years, more and more train and tram sets came into the museum. In the 1950s and 1960s, the entire square was already full of rolling stock, but which greatly suffered there under the weather.

A first improvement was the establishment in 1975 of a covered platform, and two years later the area was then expanded again. A new pedestrian bridge over the still operating freight rail line now allowed the visitors access to the rear exhibition areas. The forecourt was cleared and converted into a parking lot.

In the station building, the historic department was housed in the right wing, the left wing of the modern department. In addition to old paintings and prints historic bridge models and models of different train types showed very clearly the development of railways in the Netherlands. In the 1980s, the last section was set up in order to show the latest developments. There, among other things, a driver's cab of the Dutch transport railcar plan Y ( De Sprinter ) is issued.

From 1988 to 1989, the station building was rebuilt again. The interior was completely redone and decorated by then modern point of view. This facility remained until 2003 exist. The outdoor area was gradually expanded by a railway landscape with smaller historic farm buildings and one of the oldest Dutch railway bridges.

Latest additions from the 1990s were a freight warehouse of 1881 from the village of Nijverdal in a restaurant is housed, as well as a new building on the outside area with a large model railway., Which has grown over the years material collection was restored in the 1990s to a large extent and placed in roadworthy condition.

2002 again, substantial reconstruction was decided. The station building was closed in 2003, vacated and taken from the 19th century to its original state. It was equipped with the Koninklijke Wachtkamer, the Royal waiting room of the old station building in The Hague ( Den Haag station Staatsspoor ).

The new exhibition

Also, the exhibition area was cleared in 2003 for the most part and refurbished. There was a new museum building, where the exhibition will be presented in four thematic worlds:

Outside was erected a historic water tower next to the existing signal house Hoogezand- Sappemeer.

The presentation of the exhibition and the selection of decoration pieces based now more on the visit by families with children and groups. The technical content of the exhibition occurs behind something back. That this concept from the perspective of the museum rises, as proven by the steadily increasing since 2005, visitor numbers.

Collection

The Railway Museum now has an important collection of rolling stock. It is already too large to be shown in its entirety on the available terrain.
