Rakovica, Belgrade

Rakovica (Serbian: Раковица ) is a municipality of Belgrade.

The name Rakovica is first mentioned in 1560 in the Turkish census as a village Vlaha. According to the traditions of the place got its name from the crayfish ( rak = cancer), the inhabitants of the river that gurgled through the settlement. Until 1952 Rakovica belonged to different districts and was from 1952 to 1960 a municipality of its own. Since 1960 Rakovica belonged to the municipality of Čukarica and in 1974 it became an independent municipality.

The town festival is celebrated on 14 October, the day of the Virgin of Mercy in the Gregorian calendar.
