Rangárþing ytra

Rangárþing Ytra is an Icelandic community in the region Suðurland.

It was formed on 16 March 2002, the former rural communities Rangárvellir ( Rangárvallahreppur ) Djúpárhreppur and Holta -og Landsveit. The municipality had 1604 inhabitants on 1 January 2009.

The largest settlement of the municipality is Hella. The place Rauðalækur has 34 inhabitants.

Geography

The western boundary of the municipality ( the municipality Flóahreppur ) formed by the River Þjórsá. To the west of Hella is the western part of the municipality of Ásahreppur. Centrally located in the municipality is the volcano Hekla. The lake is located in the municipality Sultartangalón triangle of Ásahreppur, Skeiða -og Gnúpverjahreppur and Rangárþing Ytra, in the northeast of the municipal territory. East of Sultartangalón is tethered on the river Tungnaá, the expansive flows through the area, the lake Hrauneyjálon. A little further east is the lake and the crater row Krókslón Vatnaöldur. South of Krókslón is the lake Frostastaðavatn, the crater Ljótipollur and the area Landmannalaugar.

In the extreme north- east of the village lies the Þórisvatn that belongs only to a very small part of the municipality. To the south and southeast of the Þórisvatn is a large crater lakes area, the Veiðivötn. The largest lake in this area is the Litlisjór. The northeastern boundary of the municipality ( the municipality Skaftárhreppur ) in turn forms the river Tungnaá.

In the southeast of Rangárþing Ytra is the Torfajökull and the northern part of the Mýrdalsjökull, whose western part belongs to the southern neighboring community Rangárþing eystra. Further west, also in both communities, the Tindfjallajökull.

Hella

The village of Hella on the river Ytri - Rangá located 94 km east of Reykjavík on the Ring Road No. 1 between Selfoss and Hvolsvöllur and has 806 inhabitants. Main employer from Hella are the small industries and tourism. Because of its location south of the volcano Hekla, it offers an ideal starting point for excursions to Hekla, Landmannalaugar or in the Þórsmörk. The town's name comes from caves in the river banks here. Supposedly there for land acquisition time Irish monks lived.
