Ranger is a city in Eastland County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located north of the geographical center of Texas off Interstate 20 between Abilene and Fort Worth and has a total area of 18.5 km ², of which 0.4 km ² water surface.

History

The city was named after the Texas Rangers, who had in 1870 a camp in a valley at the Palo Pinto Creek northeast of Ranger.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,584 people in 989 households, and 616 families. The population density was 142.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 84.83 % White, 6.73 % African American, 0.66 % Native American, 0.43 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 5.65 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.70% were of mixed descent, and 13.51 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 989 households 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.7 % were married couples living together. 14.7% were single mothers and 37.7 % were non-families. 34.5 % of all households were single-person households, and 18.7 % had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size amounted to 3.00.

22.7 % of the population were under 18 years old, 17.4 % from 18 to 24, 20.9% 25-44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.7 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 93.8 males.

The median income for a household was $ 22,500, and the median income for a family $ 28,255. Males had a median income of $ 24,333 versus $ 15,946 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,698. 18.3 % of the population and 14.4 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 19.1 % have children under the age of 18 and 17.8 % of those 65 or older.
