The Rarotonga International Airport is the only international airport in the Cook Islands and based on the local airline, Air Rarotonga.

It is located three kilometers outside the capital Avarua on the main island of Rarotonga.

History

The airport was inaugurated in 1974 during a visit by Queen Elizabeth 2.

In 2009 began the renovation and expansion of the existing terminal facilities. The newly remodeled Terminal was officially opened on 22 June 2010.

Due to the long runway ( 2300m ) is the use of large commercial aircraft, eg Airbus A320, Boeing 777 or Boeing 747 possible. Air New Zealand flies with Stand February 2014 1x a week on Rarotonga and the Los Angeles International Airport with a Boeing 767 -300ER on.
