Geology and vegetation

The location of the Delta geologically varied greatly, for example, the sea level was higher by 5 to 6 meters approximately 4,000 years ago, so that the mouth to the west of Hanoi was ( Higham 1989).

The always significant amount mitgeschwemmter sediments has greatly increased through deforestation, intensive cultivation and high soil erosion in the catchment area in recent years and is currently about 10 million tonnes per year, ie 1.5 kg per cubic meter of water. The soil has a strong order result, as well as a growth of the delta by about 100 m per year. The red river is also notorious for strong seasonal variations in water quantity and its violent floods.

These circumstances forced the Vietnamese since the eleventh century to contain the river system with levees, the / s are designed today to a water supply 49000-57000 m³. The highest ever value of 37,000 m³ / s was measured in 1945. Meanwhile, the embanked river bed is mostly higher than the surrounding countryside. The maximum tidal range along the coast of the delta is approximately 4 m. If predictions of the IPCC are true with respect to the rising of the sea level, is the entire Delta, which is only slightly between 1 m and 3 m above sea level, at risk.

With the hazards of the river system and its delta deal various multinational commissions, the project Flocods ( Flood Control Decision Support ).

History and Significance

The Delta with its fertile sediment deposits is a major area of agricultural production in Vietnam. About 47 % of the area ( 820 800 ha) is agricultural land, is grown on more than a third of the rice production of the country. The irrigation and drainage is done by an ingenious system of dams, dikes and canals. The total length of the base up to 40 m wide dikes today, is more than 3000 km, on the crowns often run traffic routes.

During the Vietnam War, the region was heavily bombed.
