The redtail catfish ( Phractocephalus hemioliopterus ) is up to 1.30 meters high representatives of the catfish ( Pimelodidae ). They are the only species of the genus Phractocephalus.

Occurrence

The redtail catfish (English Redtail Catfish, Catfish Banana, port. Evolution and Genetics

Phractocephalus hemioliopterus is the only extant species of the genus Phractocephalus. In 2003, the extinct species P. nassi was discovered in the Urumaco Formation in Venezuela. She lived 13 million years ago in the Miocene. In the Brazilian state of Acre another extinct species has been discovered which was not described in more detail below.
