Reggiane Re.2004

The Reggiane Re.2004 was an aircraft project of the Italian manufacturer Reggiane.

History

The story of the fighter planes of Reggiane was characterized by the lack of suitable and available aircraft engine for the excellent se cell. Thus arose starting with the Reggiane Re.2000 a number of machines with radial engines and inline engines up to Reggiane Re.2005. Parallel to the development of Re.2005 an alternative should be available if the planned there engine Fiat RA.1050 RC.58 Tifone, a built in license German DB605A -1 are not available, or the pattern of expected benefits should not reach.

The development was named Re.2004 and 25 should use the liquid-cooled engine Isotta Fraschini Zeta RC / 60. This was a 24-cylinder turbocharged engine with an output of 1250 hp. Fuselage, wings and other components were identical with those of the Re.2005. 1942, a prototype and pre-series 10 were ordered. The engine was tested in the three -engined Savoia - Marchetti SM.79 Savoia - Marchetti SM.81 and. This occurred overheating problems to light that could never be completely overcome in the sequence. So the order was canceled back in 1943. Another important aspect here was the now successfully completed development of Re.2005, so that an alternative was no longer necessary.
