René Portocarrero

René Portocarrero ( born February 24, 1912 in Cerro, Havana, † April 7, 1985 in Havana ) was a Cuban painter, illustrator and ceramicist.

Life and work

In 1924, René Portocarrero studied at the Academy Villate and for a short time at the Academy of San Alejandro. He left the academic teaching and worked autonomously. This was followed by trips to Europe, Haiti and the United States and numerous exhibitions, such as the Julien Levy Gallery in New York. 1950 he has worked with include Wifredo Lam, Amelia Peléaz, Mariano Martinez and Pedro in the village of Santiago de las Vegas to ceramics.

In 1961 he took part in discussions about culture in the National Library José Marti together with Fidel Castro. Portocarrero had a seat at UNESCO, contact Peggy Guggenheim and worked for the Japanese Women's Association. In 1979 he was commissioned by UNESCO of the official poster for the Year of the Child. In the 1980s he taught Victor Miquel Moreno Piñeiro.

Exhibitions and awards

René Portocarrero has received various awards and honors, among them the Order " Felix Varela " first stage by the State Council of the Republic of Cuba and the highest possible ranking in the foreign award in Mexico, the Order of the Aztec Eagle ( Aguila Azteca ). His works are in international stocks many museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the " Museu de Arte Contemporânea " in São Paulo, the Musée d' Art Moderne in Paris, the " Pan American Union " in Washington, the " Museo de Arte Moderno " in Buenos Aires and in private collections.
