Riccardo Freda

Riccardo Freda (* February 24, 1909 in Alexandria, Egypt; † 20 December 1999 ) was an Italian film director and screenwriter.

Life

Freda was born to Italian parents in Alexandria. He later grew up in Milan, where he studied at the university, was a sculptor and later art critic at "Il Popolo di Lombardia ". After visiting the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia his film career began in 1937 as a screenwriter and production assistant for " Tirrenia " and later " Elica Films". Until his directorial debut in 1942, he wrote numerous screenplays for directors such as Gennaro Righelli and Raffaello Matarazzo. With his first film, Don Cesare de Bazan began a series of successful works, where he focused on historical films, especially the large audience found. Then he turned to the mythological film; also he was with I vampiri 1956 one of the pioneers of the Italian horror film, for which he presented early masterpieces. Freda was known for mastery of crowd scenes, so he took over the direction of the second rod for some movies.

Freda was married to Italian actress Gianna Maria Canale. One of his pseudonyms was George Lincoln
