Richard Allan, Baron Allan of Hallam

Richard Beecroft Allan, Baron Allan of Hallam ( born February 11, 1966 in Sheffield ) is a British politician of the Liberal Democrats. He belonged to the House of Commons from 1997 to 2005 and was appointed Life Peer in 2010.

Life and career

Allan attended Oundle School, an independent school in north-east Northamptonshire. He studied at Pembroke College and graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology and Anthropology from. From the Bristol Polytechnic in 1990, he received a Master of Science in Information Technology. He was from 1984 to 1985 worked as a field archaeologist in the UK, France and the Netherlands, and later from 1988 to 1989 in Ecuador. From 1991 to 1997 he was a computer manager at Avon Family Health Services Authority ( FHSA Avon ).

Allan was from 1993 to 1995 member of the Council ( Councillor ) of Avon County Council and Deputy Chairman ( Deputy Leader ) of the group of the Liberal Democrats. From 1994 to 1995 he was a member of the Bath City Council.

Membership in the House of Commons

In the general election in 1997 he defeated Irvine Patnick of the Conservative Party with a majority of 8,221 with a swing of 15.3%. He was re-elected with a majority of 9,347 in 2001.

During his mandate was to Allan various special committees ( Select Committee ). He was from 1998 to 2001 chairman of the House of Commons Information Select Committee. He was a member of the Liaison Select Committee at 1998 and 2005. Allan was the founding chairman of the Parthenon 2004 campaign for the return of the Parthenon Marbles. From 1997 to 2001 he was a board member of the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (Post). Allen was the Liberal Democrat spokesman for Home and Legal Affairs ( Community Relations and Urban Affairs ) from 1997 to 1999, education and employment from 1999 to 2001, Trade and Industry from 2001 to 2002 and for the Cabinet Office from 2002 and 2005.

Allan was a member of other committees. From 1997 to 1998 he was a member of the Committee on Internal Affairs and the Committee on Finances and Services 1997-2001. In 2000 /2001 provides that belonged to the Education and Employment ( Employment Sub-Committee ) on. He was a member of the Committee on Public accounts from 2003 to 2005.

Allan did not start for the general election in 2005. His successor was Nick Clegg, for which he was campaign manager.

Membership in the House of Lords

Allan was appointed Life peer as Baron Allan of Hallam, of Ecclesall in the County of South on 22 July 2010. His official introduction to the House of Lords took place on 26 June 2010, with the assistance of Elizabeth Barker, Baroness Barker and Paul Tyler, Baron Tyler. His inaugural address was delivered on 1 November 2010.

As subjects of political interest he found on the website of the upper house information technology, internal politics, education and cultural heritage to. As states of interest he calls Kenya, the countries of Latin America and especially Ecuador and Colombia, and the United States.

Allan is present regularly in session.

Currently (April 2012) it is policy director for Europe ( Director of Policy in Europe) of Facebook, previously he was Head of Government Affairs ( Head of Government Affairs ) for Cisco Systems UK. He gave several interviews to the media critical reports on Facebook. In January 2012 he told the Leveson Inquiry Commission ( Leveson Inquiry ) on the behavior of Facebook's from in relation to the use of false identities and Internet concerning the protection of privacy on Facebook.

He is a Visiting Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute and Vice Chairman ( Deputy Chairman ) of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles.

He is also a member of the Advisory Council ( Advisory Council ) of the Hansard Society and the Advisory Board of the Open Rights Group.

Family

Allan married on May 25, 1991 Louise Netley on 25 May 1991, Bath. Later they separated. Allan has twin daughters with his current partner.
