Richard M. Noyes

Richard Macy Noyes ( born April 6, 1919 in Champaign, Illinois; † 25 November 1997) was an American physical chemist.

Life and work

Noyes in 1959 professor of chemistry at the University of Oregon, where he became professor emeritus in 1984. His area of ​​research was the kinetics with emphasis on the study of oscillating reactions. Richard J. Field, Endre Körös and Noyes 1972 developed a model, the so-called FKN mechanism or Oregonator to describe the Belousov -Zhabotinsky reaction. In 1976 he explained to the reaction mechanism of the Bray- Liebhafsky reaction together with Kumud R. Sharma.

Noyes received numerous honors and awards. He received in 1955 the Guggenheim and Fulbright Research Fellowship in 1964. In the years 1978 and 1979 he was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Senior American Scientist Award. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences and in 1989 a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1977. He has published 190 scientific articles in various journals. He was also Associate Editor of the Journal of Physical Chemistry. On his 70th birthday, he was honored by this journal with a Festschrift.
