Richard N. Haass

Richard Nathan Haass ( born July 28, 1951 in Brooklyn ) is an American diplomat, and since July 2003, President of the Council on Foreign Relations.

From 2001 he worked as Director of Policy Planning at the State Department of the United States and was considered a close aide of the then Secretary of State Colin Powell. As a confirmed by the Senate of the United States Ambassador, he successfully supported George J. Mitchell in advancing the peace process to resolve the conflict in Northern Ireland. He occupied beyond even the post of coordinator for future policy towards Afghanistan.

Haass appropriated from 1989 to 1993 as a National Security Council Senior Director for Near East and South Asian Affairs, and as Special Assistant to the President under George Bush, extensive political knowledge on. He was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal for his help in the development of operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Previously, he held several offices in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( 1981-85 ), the Ministry of Defence ( 1979-80 ) and worked as a legislative assistant in the U.S. Senate.

He was awarded a Rhodes scholar in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College and beyond the Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy at Oxford University.

He is the author of eleven books on foreign policy issues, as well as a book on management. With his wife, he has two children, Francesca and Sam and currently lives in New York City.
