Riether Werder

The Riether Werder, also Rieth shear Werder, is an island in Neuwarper lake, a bay of the Szczecin Lagoon. It is the only Haffinsel on German territory.

The first written mention of the island dates back to 1252 when Duke Barnim I of Pomerania to the monastery Eldena besides other property also gave this island, for the Slavic name Wozstro is specified. The present name of the island is derived from the situated on the southern shore of the lake village Rieth.

The island belongs to the district of Vorpommern - Greifswald in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern in the north- east of Germany. She has a bird island national significance. It is 0.79 km ² in size and is located about 1 km from the southern and western shores of Lake Neuwarper. Immediately on the eastern tip of the island the sea border extends to the Republic of Poland.

Rare birds such as the common tern or the Snipe can be found here. Eagle, Montagu's harrier, marsh harriers, red kites, black kites, kestrels, tree Falcons, Honey Buzzards and buzzards are also at home here. Trespassing on the island is prohibited, it belongs as well as the west shore of Lake Neuwarper nature reserve Altwarper inland dunes, Neuwarper lake and Riether Werder.
