Robert Bakewell (geologist)

Robert Bakewell (* 1768, † August 15 1843 in Hampstead ) was an English geologist, who was well known due to its geological textbooks that appeared in several countries, including Germany.

Bakewell was as a close observer known, he was one of the first teachers of general and applied geology. His Introduction to Geology (Introduction to Geology ) from 1813 contained a lot of sound information - including the first, though few details pointing geological map of the whole of England - and reached to 1838 five editions. Bakewell changed in the different editions of a more sober description of geological phenomena in a more poetic expression, in particular in the description of fossils. The second edition was translated and published in Germany. The third and fourth edition were published by Professor Silliman at Yale University in emphasis. In the United States, a scientific controversy broke out about an attachment, the Silliman of the American edition added, in which he tried to reconcile the texts of Genesis with the findings of geology.

Bakewell published alongside his Introduction to Geology 1819, another textbook entitled Introduction to Mineralogy (Introduction to Mineralogy ).
