Robert Hamerling

Robert Hamer Ling, born Johann Rupert Hammerling, ( born March 24, 1830 in Kirchberg am Walde, Lower Austria, † July 13, 1889 in Graz) was an Austrian poet and writer.

Life

Robert Hamer Ling was born the son of a penniless Weber in Kirchberg am Walde. In 1840 he attended - with the support of sponsors and supporters - the gymnasium of the Cistercian Abbey of Zwettl and then the Scots School in Vienna. In 1848 he joined the Revolution ( " Germany is my country And Öst'rreich egg, my Motherland! ?" ) And began his studies at the University of Vienna ( Studies: Classical philology, philosophy, history, medicine).

1852 Hamer Ling worked as a substitute teacher for classical languages ​​in Vienna. From 1853 to 1854 he taught at the Academic Gymnasium in Graz, 1855-1866, he worked as a secondary school in Trieste. In the autumn of 1866 he had to retire due to a chronic stomach complaint and went to live in Graz, where his prolific literary production phase began. He died on 13 July 1889 in Stifting (today district of Graz in the 10th district of Ries ) at the age of 59 years. He was buried in the cemetery in Graz St. Leonhard.

Hamerlingstraße was a distant relative of Adolf Hitler.

Importance

Hamerlingstraße counted in his time the most widely read German-language authors. His main works include the epic Ahasuerus in Rome ( written 1865), which introduced him to a wide readership only, and The King of Sion (1869).

Appreciation

In his birthplace Kirchberg am Walde, there is a Robert Hamer Ling Museum, which is supported by Hamerlingstraße Club. The German national politician Georg Ritter von Schönerer has his birthplace tear down in 1891 and erected in its place the foundation house. Today, the foundation house a museum.

In 1890, Rudolf -Fuenfhaus ( 15th District ) named in Vienna the Robert Hamer Ling- alley after him, 1904 in der Josefstadt ( 8th district ) of Hamerlingplatz, as well as to unknown points in time in Penzing ( 14th District ), the Hamerlinggasse and Simmering ( 11th district ) of Hamerlingweg.
