Robert Lawson (author)

Robert Lawson ( born October 4, 1892 in New York City, † May 26 1957 in Westport (Connecticut) ) was an American author and illustrator.

Life

Robert Lawson studied from 1911 to 1914 at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts. He had in 1914 in Greenwich Village, his first studio. There he created illustrations, stage sets and the like. In World War I he was at a Tarnungseinheit, in September 1919, some of Sidney Sime influenced illustrations Lawson appeared in The Century Magazine, for which he also later worked. In 1922 he illustrated his first book, Little Prince Too Fat. For the period from 1922 to the 1930s, there is little evidence of Lawson's work, and then he began to illustrate numerous children's books. His pictures for The Wee Men From Bally Wooden, From the Horn of the Moon and The Roving Lobster by Arthur Mason stylistically reminiscent of works by John R. Neill and Dorothy Lathrop. In 1936, Munro Story of Ferdinand Leafs, 1938 Richard Atwater Mr. Potter's Penguins, 1944 Rabbit Hill and 1951 McWhinney 's Jaunt.

Lawson illustrated about 40 children's books and wrote - from 1939-17 own. His first book was called Ben and Me and deals with the friendship of Benjamin Franklin at a mouse. The children's book in 1953 when Ben and I filmed by Walt Disney.

In 1941, the Caldecott Award received for the They Were Good and Strong, 1945 Newbery Award for Rabbit Hill. He was the only of the authors and illustrators of his time, who won both awards.

Many of the books written or illustrated Lawson, negotiated by animals. Especially rabbit Lawson recorded frequently. One of the most famous works, the imaged Lawson, Richard Atwater Bestsellers Mr. Popper's Penguins. Many works Lawson still appear in print.

A large part of his estate is located under the title Robert Lawson Papers or the collection number CLRC -46 in the University of Minnesota Libraries Children's Literature Research Collections. Included are documents from the period 1932 to 1956, including materials about the history of 16 books.

Robert Lawson was buried in the Mountain Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport (Connecticut). Every year there is a conference for children and young people 's book illustrators and authors in Bridgeport. She was named to honor Lawson's " Rabbit Hill Festival of Literature ".
