Robert Liebmann

Robert Liebmann ( born June 5, 1890 in Berlin, † July 1942 in Auschwitz ) was a German screenwriter.

Life

After high school he studied from 1908 to 1913 at the universities of Freiburg, Munich and Berlin Jura. From 1914 he wrote theater and film reviews for the German Allgemeine Zeitung, 1916 for the Berliner Morgenpost and from 1918 for the BZ at noon. In the same year he married his childhood girlfriend Nené Flack.

At that time he began writing libretti, lyrics for revues and film screenplays. With his comedies, romances, adventure and horror stories, he became one of the most successful writers of the Weimar Republic. In 1928 he founded with Harry Piel Ariel Film GmbH. In April 1929 he was dramaturg at the Ufa In the time of the beginning of talkies Liebmann was involved as an author or co-author of several classics, including dances The Blue Angel and The Congress.

Shortly after the seizure of power, in April 1933 Liebmann was released as a Jew by Ufa. In the opening credits of the last German film, in which he was involved, Walzerkrieg, his name no longer appeared. Liebmann emigrated to Paris. There and later in Hollywood, he worked on some emigrants films. In 1938 he was back in Paris, where he received his last film orders. In the same year he was expelled in July from the Reich Film Chamber. In July 1939 the withdrawal of German citizenship followed. During the occupation of France by the German Wehrmacht Liebmann was arrested and sent to Drancy transit camp. From there, German authorities deported him to the concentration camp Auschwitz, where he was probably murdered immediately after his arrival.
