Roberto Arlt

Roberto Godofredo Arlt ( born April 2, 1900 in Buenos Aires, † July 26, 1942 ) was an Argentine journalist, short story writer and playwright.

He belonged to the Grupo Boedo, an association of more socialist-oriented young writers who stood by Jorge Luis Borges, in contrast to European and aesthetically oriented Grupo Florida. He found during his lifetime hardly recognition, but is now regarded as the founder of the Argentine city novel, also important stylist. He is often compared to Dostoevsky or Doblin. Several of his novels have been filmed. Arlt died at 42 after a heart attack.

Life and work

Arlt came from a German - Austrian immigrant family who lived in extremely poor conditions. In addition, his father was violent, what should be reflected in almost all texts Roberto. In the 1930s, he occasionally correspondent for El Mundo in Rio de Janeiro, Spain and North Africa. Until his untimely death, he turns almost entirely to the drama. In expressive, for some critics as " vulgar " language Arlt treated life the curse of the struggle for existence, the rebellion, the crime, the psychology of violence. In his last years he tried because of its constant need of money even as the inventor of a synthetic ladies stocking - in vain. Arlt's estate is located in the Ibero-American Institute in Berlin library.
