Rodney Harmon

Rodney Harmon ( born August 16, 1961 in Richmond, Virginia ) is a former American professional tennis player.

Life

Harmon graduated from the University of Tennessee and was voted in the top selection All-American twice. He won in 1980 with Mel Purcell the NCAA doubles championship. He was also a two -time champion of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. During his studies he participated in the U.S. Open 1982. He reached after beating the favorite Brian Teacher and Eliot Teltscher the quarter-finals, where he lost to the later Turnierspieger Jimmy Connors. He was Arthur Ashe only the second African American to had advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. He finished his studies in 1983 and then became a professional tennis player.

In 1984, he stood in the semi-finals of the Queen 's Club Championships, the year after he won in Nancy at the side of Marcel Freeman his only title on the ATP World Tour. Its highest listing in the tennis world ranking he reached in 1983 with position 56 in the singles and in 1985 with position 203 in doubles.

In some his best result was at a Grand Slam tournament, the quarter finals at the U.S. Open in 1982. 's Doubles competition he reached the year after the second round of the U.S. Open.

After the end of his professional career, he worked as a tennis coach at the University of Miami. Since 2002 he leads the youth department at the United States Tennis Association ( USTA ).
