Rodulfus Tortarius

Rodulfus Tortarius (* around 1063 in Gien; † after 1122), mentioned in various sources Raoul Tortaire, Raoul of Tour animal, Raoul de La Tourte, Raoul le tour animal, Radulphus Tortarius, Rudolphus Tortarius, Radulphus Flaviacensis, was a learned Benedictine monk and poet the Abbey of Fleury- sur -Loire.

Life

Rodulfus Tortarius was against 1063, born in Gien on the Loire, in the diocese of Auxerre.

About his family nothing more is known except that Rodulfus had five brothers, two of whom died young in a feud, and two more later.

Rodulfus studied literature and linguistics, grammar and logic, before he entered the monastery of Fleury and those enriched by his skills. He worked there as a historian and canonist. That Rodulfus enjoyed high reputation among his abbot, one acknowledges the fact that he was taken as a missionary in important matters.

How Rodulfus came to his enigmatic epithet Tortarius is unclear.

Rodolfus was with Bishop Galon of Paris, 1104-1116, known personally, as can be seen a poem dedicated to the Bishop of Antioch about Boëmundus.

Between 1110 and 1115 he undertook a journey to Normandy, especially in the cities of Caen and Bayeux. Presumably he trod also at a certain time in his life the Santiago pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

The exact circumstances of his death and the date of death Rodulfus ' are not known. At least we know that Rodulfus was ripped from real life and not died before 1122.
