Roel de Wit

Roelof ' Roel ' Josephus de Wit ( born March 31, 1927 in Amsterdam, † June 3, 2012 in Haarlem, North Holland province ) was a Dutch politician of the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA ), which between 1970 and 1976, among others, mayor of Alkmaar and then to 1992, Commissioner of the Queen ( van de Koningin Commissaris ) was for the province of North Holland.

Life

Studies, career and Councillor of Amsterdam

After visiting the Hogereburgerschool in Amsterdam de Wit studied biology at the University of Amsterdam and joined while studying the Youth Association of Natural History ( Nederlandse Jeugdbond voor Natuurstudie ) in as a member. After graduating, he became in 1949 the Commission for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection employee and was its secretary 1954 until 1965. In this capacity he gave the Commission a new role in which he published critical writings on the agricultural sector, in which he had referred the designated as the main culprit for the degradation of nature and landscape.

De Wit, who in 1946 was a member of the PvdA, began in the late 1950s, his political career in 1958 when he was first elected member of the Provinciale Staten of the Province of North Holland and this until 1976. In 1962 he became a member of the city council of Amsterdam between 1965 and 1970 and was Assistant Secretary of the City of Amsterdam and as such responsible for public works, urban development and affairs of the agglomeration. During his tenure, the construction of the housing development Bijlmermeer district in Amsterdam Zuidoost and planning for the 1977 Metro opened in Amsterdam fell.

Mayor and Commissioner of the Queen

In 1970, he was the successor of HJ Wijtema mayor of Alkmaar and retained this position until his replacement by Cees Roozemond 1976.

Subsequently, he was on August 16, 1976 successor to Ferdinand January Kranenburg representative of the Queen for the province of North Holland and held that post until his replacement by Jos van Kemenade on 1 April 1992. During his sixteen years in office he retained beyond numerous positions in the fields of nature conservation and land since 1981 and was also Chairman of the Planning Commission of the province.
