Roel Velasco

Roel Velasco ( born June 26, 1972 in Negros Occidental) is a former Filipino boxer.

1992 Velasco Asia champion in the light flyweight (-48 kg). In the same year he also at the Olympic Games in Barcelona and arrived after victories over James Wanene, Kenya ( 16:1 ), Rajendra Prasad, India ( 15:6 ), and Rowan Williams, UK (7:6 ), the semi-finals. In this he faced the Cuban Rogelio Marcelo, he was beaten already in the first round. This Velasco won the Olympic bronze medal.

After the Olympic Games Velasco lost its national supremacy to his younger brother Mansueto Velasco. Only in 1997 he again took part in an international championship. At the World Championships in Budapest, he suggested, inter alia, Rafael Lozano, Spain ( 4:4 ) before the Cubans Maikro Romero 9-1 points lost the final.

Since the end of his boxing career Velasco serves as a soldier with the rank of Petty Officer First Class by the naval forces of the Philippines. He is also coach of the Philippine Boxnationalmannschaft.
