Roger Nicoll

Roger Andrew Nicoll (* 1941 in Princeton, New Jersey) is an American neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco.

Life

Nicoll studied at the Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, biology and chemistry before moving to the University of Rochester Medical School in Rochester, New York. After he had read a book of the physiologist and Nobel Prize winner John Carew Eccles, Nicoll interrupted his medical studies to pursue a year at the National Institutes of Health ( NIH) electrophysiological studies. After the acquisition of the M.D. 1968 Nicoll returned to the NIH. After two years of teaching and collaboration with Eccles at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York at Buffalo, New York, Nicoll received in 1975 a professorship at the University of California, San Francisco, where he now (2012 ) a professor of cellular and molecular pharmacology research into the cellular and molecular mechanisms of learning and memory in mammals is derived.

Work

Nicoll was able to gain fundamental insights into the neural and synaptic plasticity in vertebrates electrophysiological experiments. In addition, he was able to different mechanisms of action of certain drugs and neurotransmitters - including cannabinoids and Endocannobinoide (see also endocannabinoid system ) - clarify and gain a deeper insight into the sophistication and complexity of the synaptic signal transduction in the brain.
