Roland Thöni

Roland Thöni ( born January 17, 1950 in Trafoi ) is an Italian former Alpine skier. The South Tyrolean was from the early 1970s in the World Cup Skiing active. Together with his cousin Gustav Thöni he was briefly one of the best slalom skier in the world.

Biography

Thönis star went on in February 1971, when he was able to place in the top ten of a World Cup race with a seventh place in the slalom at Mürren the first time.

The 1971/72 season was his best. At the Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo, he won the slalom behind the Spaniard Francisco Fernández Ochoa and his cousin Gustav the bronze medal. One month after the end of the games he enjoyed its strongest phase in the World Cup. Within four days, from the 15th to the 18th March 1972 he was first eighth and third in the downhill and giant slalom in Val Gardena before in the special slalom in Madonna di Campiglio (3- Tre- race) and Pra Loup he the only two World Cup victories of his career imports. In 1973, he was Italian Champion in the downhill.

Then it was silent around him. In the following seasons, he could never quite match this peak results. After the Olympic Winter Games 1976 in Innsbruck Thöni ended his sports career. Today he operates a ski rental in Solda.
