Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Beira

The Archdiocese of Beira (latin: Archidioecesis Beirensis ) is a location in Mozambique Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Beira. It covers the entire province of Sofala.

History

Pope Pius XII. founded the bishopric of Beira with the Apostolic Constitution Sollemnibus Conventionibus on September 4, 1940 cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques, where there was also a suffragan. With the bull Quo efficacius it was raised on June 4, 1984 in the rank of Metropolitanerzbistums.

Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:

  • October 6, 1954 to the bishopric of Quelimane;
  • May 6, 1962 to the bishopric of Tete;
  • November 19, 1990 in the diocese of Chimoio.
