Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calabar

The Archdiocese of Calabar (Latin: Archidioecesis calabarensis ) is a location in Nigeria Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Calabar.

History

The Archdiocese of Calabar was born on July 9, 1934 by Pope Pius XI. built with the Apostolic Constitution Ad enascentis of annexations of the Apostolic Vicariate of Western Nigeria as Apostolic Prefecture of Calabar. On March 13, 1938, the Apostolic Prefecture of Calabar were from parts of their territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Ogoja. The Apostolic Prefecture of Calabar was posted on June 12, 1947 by Pope Pius XII. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Sedes Apostolica Solet Apostolic Vicariate.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Calabar was posted on April 18, 1950 by Pius XII. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Laeto accepimus to the diocese and the Archdiocese of Onitsha is a suffragan. On March 1, 1963, the Diocese of Calabar were parts of its territory from the foundation of the Diocese of Ikot Ekpene. A further transfer of territory took place on 4 July 1989 establishing the bishopric of Uyo. On March 26, 1994, the Diocese of Calabar was elevated by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution laetis captis to an archbishopric.
