Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City

The Archdiocese of Benin City (Latin: Archidioecesis Urbis Beninensis ) is a location in Nigeria Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Benin City.

History

The Archdiocese of Benin City was on May 2, 1884, Pope Leo XIII. built out of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate of two guineas as Apostolic Prefecture of Upper Niger. On August 24, 1911, the Apostolic Prefecture of Upper Niger gave parts of their territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Eastern Nigeria. The Prefecture Apostolic of Upper Niger was renamed on August 24, 1911 in Apostolic Prefecture of Western Nigeria.

On August 24, 1918, the Apostolic Prefecture of Western Nigeria was by Pope Benedict XV. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Summa afficimur laetitia Apostolic Vicariate. The Apostolic Vicariate of Western Nigeria announced on July 9, 1934 from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefectures Calabar and Benue. On January 12, 1943, the Apostolic Vicariate of Western Nigeria was renamed as Apostolic Vicariate of Asaba - Benin.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Asaba - Benin was posted on April 18, 1950 by Pope Pius XII. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Laeto accepimus to the diocese and renamed Diocese of Benin City. It was the Archdiocese of Lagos is a suffragan. On 21 February 1955, the Diocese of Benin City gave parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Kabba. For more territorial concessions were made on 10 March 1964 on the establishment of the Diocese of Warri and on 5 July 1973 on the foundation of the diocese Issele - Uku.

On March 26, 1994, the Diocese of Benin City was elevated by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution multinationals nominibus to an archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Benin City was on December 4, 2002 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Auchi. A further transfer of territory took place on 14 December 2005 foundation of the diocese Uromi.
