Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Port Moresby

The Archdiocese of Port Moresby (Latin: Portus Archidioecesis Moresbiensis ) is a location in Papua New Guinea Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Port Moresby.

History

The Archdiocese of Port Moresby was born on May 10, 1889 by Pope Leo XIII. , built from the Apostolic Vicariate of Melanesia sub-areas, which was founded in 1844 from the Vicariate Apostolic of New Zealand out as Apostolic Vicariate of New Guinea. On November 14, 1922, the Apostolic Vicariate of New Guinea was renamed Vicariate Apostolic Papua. The Apostolic Vicariate of Papua announced on June 13, 1946 from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Samarai. On June 13, 1946, the Apostolic Vicariate of Papua was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate of Port Moresby. The Apostolic Vicariate of Port Moresby announced on November 13, 1958 from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Mendi. Other annexations took place on July 16, 1959 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Daru and the Apostolic Vicariate of Yule Iceland.

On November 15, 1966, the Vicariate Apostolic of Port Moresby by Pope Paul VI was. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Laeta incrementa to an archbishopric.
