Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rijeka

The Archdiocese of Rijeka ( nadbiskupija kroat. Riječka, Latin: Archidioecesis fluminensis ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Croatia, based in Rijeka. The Archdiocese are as suffragan dioceses the three bishoprics Gospic -Senj, Krk and Porec - Pula. The current Archbishop is Ivan Devčić.

Prehistory

On July 27, 1969 by Pope Paul VI. founded a new church province of the Archdiocese of Rijeka -Senj. For this, the Diocese of Rijeka ( which was founded on April 25, 1925 under Italian rule ) merged with the diocese Modruš and the diocese of Senj. The diocese Modruš was thus dissolved, while the Diocese of Senj equal persists alongside the diocese Rijeka. This new province was elevated to the rank of a metropolitan archbishop's church. Were subordinate to her the three dioceses of Krk, Poreč and Pula. Their bishops were suffragans of the Metropolitan of Rijeka -Senj. In 2000 the name was changed in the Archdiocese of Rijeka. A part of the diocesan territory was assigned to the newly established Diocese of Gospic -Senj.

Diocese of Rijeka

About the existence of a medieval diocese based in Rijeka there is as yet no firm evidence. Between 1818 and 1821, efforts were made the seat of the diocese Modruš to Rijeka embarrassed, but since this border changes of the neighboring diocese would have required you saw on this project. The Slovenian part belonged administratively to the Bishop of Ljubljana. The Croatian part was entrusted to the Bishop of Senj - Modruš to manage on 20 November 1951.

In the past, in the territories of present-day Archdiocese of Rijeka -Senj the medieval Croatian Glagolitic alphabet was widespread, at least since the early 10th century. Approved for liturgical texts, it was in a letter from Pope Innocent IV to Bishop Philip of Senj from the year 1248th In 1620, during the tenure of Bishop Agatić, was highlighted at the Synod of Bribir the need to print new liturgical books leave. Soon after leaving the Congregation in Rome, under the editorship of Rafael Levaković a new Glagolitic Missal in 1631 and a breviary in 1648 to print.
