Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh

The Archdiocese of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh (Latin Sancti Andreae et Archidioecesis Edimburgensis ) is an Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland, based in Edinburgh.

History

St Andrews was 908 bishopric, who went with the Scottish Reformation in the year. Today Archdiocese of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh was founded on October 13, 1653 by Pope Innocent X as Apostolic Prefecture of Scotland; first prefect was William Ballantine. On March 16, 1694 was converted into a Vicariate Apostolic, first as a Vicariate Scotland. On July 23, 1727 Vicariate Apostolic Vicariate Scotland was divided into two: the " Lowland District " and the " Highland District ", on February 13, 1827 Apostolic Vicariate of " Lowland District " with the Breve Quanta laetitia was by Leo XII. divided into the Vicariate " Eastern District " and " Western District " and the " Highland District " in " Northern District " renamed.

With the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in Scotland, Pope Leo XIII. with the Zirkumskriptionsbulle Ex supremo Apostolatus on 4 March 1878, the Vicariate of " Northern District " to the diocese of Aberdeen, the Vicariate " Western District " to the archbishopric of Glasgow and the Vicariate " Eastern District " for today's archbishopric; first archbishop was John Menzies Strain. In the 1990s there were numerous Catholic immigrants, v. a from Poland to Edinburgh, which today dominate the archbishopric.
