Leo Cushley

Leo William Cushley ( born June 18, 1961 in Airdrie ) is a Scottish clergyman, and Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh.

Life

Cushley received on 7 July 1985 in Uddingston, South Lanarkshire ordained a priest for the Diocese of Motherwell. In 1992 he entered the diplomatic service of the Vatican. He appeared in many African countries, in Portugal and in the United Nations. Most recently, he served as Head of the English Section of the Secretariat of State. In this capacity, he worked closely with Pope Benedict XVI. and Pope Francis together, such as visits from heads of state. He accompanied Pope Benedict also on his trips abroad to Cyprus, Malta and England.

Pope Francis appointed him on July 24, 2013 as Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, Cardinal James Michael Harvey, on 21 September of the same year. Co-consecrators were the apostolic nuncio to Great Britain, Archbishop Antonio Mennini, and the Glasgow Archbishop Philip Tartaglia, from whom he took office after Cardinal O'Brien had resigned because of abuse allegations.
