Roman Catholic Diocese of Indore

The Diocese of Indore (Latin: Dioecesis Indorensis ) is a located in India Roman Catholic diocese. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Bhopal and today comprises the districts of Indore, Dewas and Dhar of the state of Madhya Pradesh.

History

On 3 March 1931, the territory of Indore was formed from part of a territory of the dioceses Ajmer, Allahabad and Nagpur and handed over to the Divine Word Missionaries. On December 14, 1932 met the first Divine Word Missionaries, Father Peter Janser and his companion, Father Leo Krzeminski, a. Thanks to the efforts of both the territory was raised on 11 March 1935 Apostolic Prefecture of Indore after 3 years and Peter Janser became the first Prefect Apostolic. The territory then comprising 110,000 square kilometers and consisted of the districts of Indore, Khargone, Khandwa, Dhar, Jhabua (except the Tehsil Thandla ), Ratlam, Dewas, Ujjain, Shajapur, Rajgarh, Bhilsa ( Vidisha ), Hoshangabad and the entire state of Bhopal. Peter Janser performed the duties of the Prefect Apostolic of 11 July 1935 to the end of 1945, when he laid it down due to illness. New Prefect Apostolic in 1948 Hermann Westermann. On May 15, 1952, the Apostolic Prefecture was raised to the bishopric. First bishop of Indore was the Dutchman Frans Simons SVD. He was followed twenty years later by George M. Anathil SVD. Since 2008, Chacko Thottumarickal SVD is Bishop of the Diocese of Indore.

On September 13, 1963, the diocese lost the districts of Bhopal, Sehore, Vidisha and Hoshangabad, from which the Archdiocese of Bhopal was built. The next area loss was 1968 from the districts of Ujjain, Shajapur and Rajgarh the Eparchy of Ujjain ( Syro - Malabar Church ) was built. In 1977 the diocese of Khandwa was built from the districts Khandwa and Khargone. In 1981 the diocese of Indore district Mandsaur, who belonged to the diocese of Ajmer before. Recently lost the diocese on 25 March 2002 a part of its territory, namely the districts of Jhabua, Mandsaur, Ratlam Nimach and from which the Diocese of Jhabua was born. The present Diocese of Indore consists of the districts of Indore, Dewas and Dhar.
