Roman Catholic Diocese of Jammu–Srinagar

The Diocese of Jammu - Srinagar (Latin: Dioecesis Iammuensis - Srinagarensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Jammu, India.

History

Precursor of the diocese were the missionaries who were resident in Jammu and Kashmir since 1868. On July 2, 1887, the Apostolic Prefecture of Kafiristan and Kashmir was built from parts of the territory of the Diocese of Lahore and the missionaries of the Congregation of the Holy. Joseph Mill Hill left for management. Monsignor Ignatius Brouwer MHM was used on 13 July 1888 as the first Prefect.

With a reorganization of the dioceses of the Apostolic Prefecture of Kashmir and Jammu from parts of the Diocese of Lahore and of the Diocese of Rawalpindi was established with headquarters in Srinagar on January 17, 1952, first; first prefect was Monsignor George Shanks MHM. On May 14 In 1968 a reorganization as Apostolic Prefecture of Jammu and Kashmir with areas of Kashmir and Ladakh from the diocese of Lahore and Jammu and Poonch from the diocese of Rawalpindi; the prefecture included 14 districts.

Bishop Hippolytus Kunnunkal OFM Cap was appointed on December 28, 1978 for the first local prefect. He led the Prefecture Apostolic to the diocese of Jammu - Srinagar and was appointed on April 10, 1986 the first bishop by Pope John Paul II.
