The Diocese of Palayamkottai was on May 17, 1973 Pope Paul VI. built with the Apostolic Constitution Romani pontiffs of cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Madurai and this is a suffragan.

Territory

The diocese comprises the Palayamkottai located in the district of Tirunelveli taluks Alangulam, Ambasamudram, Cheranmadevi, Palayamkottai, Pudur, Sankarankoil, Shenkottai, Sivagiri, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi district in the nearby Kovilpatti Taluk in Tamil Nadu.
