History

The Diocese of Saint John, New Brunswick was founded on September 30, 1842 by Pope Gregory XVI. with the Apostolic Constitution Dominici gregis out of territory of the Archdiocese of Quebec erected as Diocese of Saint John in America. It was the Archdiocese of Quebec, is a suffragan. The Diocese of Saint John in America was on May 8, 1860 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Chatham. On November 15, 1924, the Diocese of Saint John in America was renamed the Diocese of Saint John, New Brunswick. The Diocese of Saint John, New Brunswick announced on February 22, 1936 parts of its territory to the creation of the Archdiocese of Moncton, which it was a suffragan, from.
