Roman Catholic Diocese of Varaždin

The Diocese of Varaždin (Latin: Dioecesis Varasdinensis, Croat. Varaždinska Biskupija ) is a location in Croatia Diocese of the Roman Catholic church located in Varaždin. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Zagreb.

History

The city of Varaždin became an important center of Christian faith, even in its early history of the city. In the 13th century the Order of St. John came to Varaždin. The Order built the Church of Sts. John the Baptist and their monastery. In the mid-13th century, the Franciscans took over the monastery and the church. In addition, the Church of St. Nicholas and the church of St was. Veit built in the city. After a fire in 1582 gradually put the baroque era in the city. The Jesuits founded their school in 1636. The building was completely damaged by a fire in 1648. After the Jesuit order, the school rebuilt and combined it with the same architectural built church of the Holy Mother of God. After the fire in 1776 were in the city of Varaždin and Varaždin suburb of buildings built in the architectural style of the Rococo and Classicism. Despite the subsequent construction changes of the 19th and 20th century still characterizes the style of the Baroque cityscape.

In the 18th century, the city became the seat of Varaždin Croatian- political values ​​of the " Banska Hrvatska ", such as the Draskovic, the Keglević, the Patačić, the Sermaga and others. The years 1767-1776 are considered the most prestigious of the city of Varaždin. In 1776, this progress was abruptly ended by fire. The cultural and political center shifted to Zagreb.

The Diocese of Varaždin was established on July 5, 1997 by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Clarorum sanctorum. The northern boundary of the diocese is the natural course of the river Drava, which corresponds to the borderline of Croatia with Hungary and Slovenia.
