Roman Ghirshman

Roman Ghirshman (originally Roman Mikhailovich Girschman ) ( born October 3, 1895 in Kharkov, † September 5, 1979 in Budapest) was a French archaeologist Ukrainian origin. He was one of the pioneers of archaeological research in Iran, where he spent nearly thirty years of his life. Among his most significant achievements to reconstruct the history of the city of Susa to the 13th century is AD (about five thousand years ).

Life

At the age of 22 years who came from a wealthy family Ukrainians and counterrevolutionary moved to Paris, where he studied archeology and ancient languages ​​. He was interested especially the archaeological ruins of Iran, as Tappe Giyan ( at Nahavand, Hamadan ), Tappe Sialk, Begram ( in Afghanistan), Bischapur and Susa.

As head of the archaeological mission that had been sent from the Louvre in Iran, Roman Ghirshman belonged in the 1930s to the first, the uncovered Tappe Sialk. His studies on Choga Zanbil were issued in four volumes. He also initiated work on the island of Kharg, Iwan -e Karkheh and the Parthian platforms in Masjed -e Soleiman close of Izeh in Khuzestan.

With 300 articles and 20 books Ghirshman novel is one of the most prolific and most recognized experts in the field of Ancient Iran. Some of his work at Susa have not yet been published, but helped other archaeologists as Henri Gashe in their follow-up studies in the 1960s and 1970s.
