History

In the U-21 Euro 1998, the Romanians host and thereby the first and only time for the European Championship finals were qualified. Since at this time the contest started equal in KO mode, the tournament was already past the quarter-finals, as in the first round, finished for the Romanians. They separated from the Netherlands 1:2, which meant the end for the first participation.

For the tournament of 2006, the team has been drawn in Group 1. There it met the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Macedonia, Finland and Armenia. After a good start with wins over Finland and Macedonia, fast was the disillusionment with a 1:4 defeat against the Czech Republic's selection. After a 2-0 win against fellow competitors from the Netherlands, the team was on the way to qualifying for the European Championship. But just five days after this victory was followed by a 0-1 defeat against outsiders Macedonia. Although the Romanians lost none of the following games, but neither the Czechs nor the Dutchman gave themselves nakedness, so the team only reached the third place and the necessary second place by two points missed.

Since the next European Championship not only the usual two years later, but in 2007 took place after the 2006 European Championships, the appropriate qualification was played in a summary trial. Starting with a preliminary round, over a short group stage with three teams and the play-off games. Romania needed only to go into the group stage. The Eastern Europeans were still the teams from Germany and Northern Ireland, randomly assigned. There was only one game against each team, so that the teams away and once had home advantage once each. In the first game on 16 August 2006, the team won clearly against the Northern Irish team 3-0. Less clear is the German team, on Matchday 2 presented "only" won 3:2 against the island footballer from Northern Ireland. So had to decide on a place in the play-offs the last game on September 5, 2006 between Romania and Germany. Here, the FRG selection selling significantly by 5-1

When qualifying for Euro 2009 is dtraf to France, Wales, Bosnia - Herzegovina and Malta. For a place in the play-off round, the victory in this group had to be achieved. DC on Matchday 1, there was a 1-1 draw against France. Also the return match ended in a draw. So the favorites of these groups took each other's points. Since France already had to suffer a defeat against Wales, and previously had to share with Romania the points, the last round of this group on 9 September 2008 was crucial, the French met with Bosnia - Herzegowinia and won that game 1-0. In the final group match Romania needed a win against Wales, but ultimately succumbed to the group winners on home soil with 0:3.
