Roslagen

Roslagen is now the name for a region on the coast of the historical Swedish province of Uppland. It comprises on the Baltic Sea located mainland sections and the offshore island ( archipelago ).

A clear definition of the boundaries of the region does not exist. According to broad descriptions of Danderyd Roslagen ranges in the south to the north Östhammar. A variety of people limits the region to the municipalities of Vaxholm, Österåker, Norrtälje and Östhammar. Furthermore, the communities Danderyd, Lidingö, Täby and Vallentuna claim it to be a part of Roslagen because they belonged to the earlier order Thing " Södra Roslags domsaga ".

The term Roslagen developed in the 15th century from the Old Swedish terms Roden and Skeppslag. Roden was the name for the regions in the country of the Svea, the rowers had to provide acts of war. This applied not only to the current region Roslagen, but also to other areas such as Swedish Södermanland and Östergötland. Skeppslag was the locale's equivalent of the term Harde. The county, which formed a Skeppslag was responsible for the equipment a vessel with crew (usually 25 people), including weapons and supplies.

A number of historians believes that Roslagen was eponymous for the Eastern European region Rus, in which Swedish emigrants are said to have been established under the so-called Norman theory. The root word is intended to relate to the Finnish and Estonian names for Sweden, Ruotsi or Rootsi.
