Rottenschwil

Rottenschwil (Swiss German: rɔt ː ː l əʃʋi ) is a municipality in the district of Muri in the southeast of the Swiss canton of Aargau. It is located in the Reuss valley. Expectant was incorporated in 1898.

Geography

Rottenschwil is about two kilometers long village street that runs from the western bank of the Reuss up to the Wagenrain, a range of hills at the transition to Bünztal. Half a kilometer meters south of Rottenschwil lies the hamlet Werd. The area between the river and hilly terrain is characterized by the completely flat alluvial plain of the River Reuss, formerly meandered here strong, often overflowed its banks and flooded the fields. The old course of the river can still be seen today in part. So the eastern municipal boundary follows the course of a defunct oxbow east of the river. Werd is located on a former horse-shoe shaped bend in the river, the " silence Reuss ' on the outskirts of Rottenschwil is also a horseshoe-shaped Altwasserlauf.

Since the last leg of melioration in the 1970s, the history of the Reuss is straightened and completely limited by flood control dams. North of Rottenschwil is the one kilometers long and up to 300 meters wide, shallow lake. The lake was artificially created in 1975 and has developed into an ideal habitat for endangered bird and amphibian species. On the western shore of the lake, which has five islands, the Rottenschwiler moss, a large wetland extends. One sixth of the municipal area is under protection.

The area of the municipality is 449 hectares, of which 107 hectares are forested and built over 33 hectares. The highest point is located on 454 meters in the Buechwald, the lowest is 379 meters in Rottenschwiler moss (ie deeper than the Reuss ).

Neighboring municipalities are Unterlunkhofen in the north, Oberlunkhofen in the east, in the southeast Jonen, Aristau in the south, the west and Besenbüren Bremgarten in the northwest.

History

In the year 1281 was the first written mention of Rotolfswile, in the Habsburg land register of 1306 was the name of the form Rotoswile. The place name comes from Old High Rotineswilari and means " farm estate of Rotin ." Most important landowners in the Middle Ages were the monasteries Muri and Hermetschwil, state rule and high courts were those of the Habsburgs. In 1415, the Confederates conquered the Aargau; Rottenschwil was now part of the Office Hermetschwil in the outdoor offices, a commons regime. However, Expectant belonged to two thirds to the basement office and thus to influence the city of Zurich, which often led to litigation.

The following centuries were characterized by frequent floods and the ever-changing course of the river here. 1682 destroyed a large fire all Rottenschwil. In March 1798, the French invaded Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic. Rottenschwil became a municipality in the district of the short-lived Bremgarten canton of Baden, while Expectant was part of the municipality in the district of Muri Aristau. After the founding of the canton of Aargau in 1803 were both villages each have their own community.

Rottenschwil and Expectant remained dominated by agriculture until well into the 20th century. After the population had doubled in the first half of the 19th century, they took in the sequence from always. Even the disposal of the State Government on May 23, 1898 merger of the two communities could not stop this trend. The existing since at least 1312 ferry across the River Reuss in 1907 was replaced by a bridge. From 1980, a building boom began its proximity to the city of Zurich, within 20 years, the population increased by more than two and half times.

A major concern has always been the taming of the free-flowing river Reuss. But even after the first melioration 1861-1863 there were repeated to dam failures and flooding. Only the second Reusstalsanierung 1972-1983 finally solved the problem. This new power plant of Zufikon in 1975 caused a backlog and thus a slower flow rate, thus the shallow lake was formed.
