Dietwil

Dietwil (Swiss German: Diettel diət, ː əl ) is a municipality in the district of Muri in the canton of Aargau. It is located in the Reuss valley and is the southernmost municipality in the canton. Previously, the community was called to distinguish it from Lucerne Grossdietwil also Kleindietwil or Dietwil in the Reuss valley. Not to be confused with the Bernese community Kleindietwil.

Geography

The village is located approximately one mile from the western bank of the Reuss located on a moraine. This is located at the foot of the Iberg, which forms the western boundary of the municipality and at the same time the border to Lake Valley. The plane between the village and the river is completely flat, the river itself is limited by a flood control dam and a behind extending drainage channel. About two hundred yards from the river lies the hamlet estates. Are more scattered individual farms on the slopes of the Iberg.

History

In 1236 Tuerwile was first mentioned in a deed in Engelberg, which is but this is a misspelling of Tuetwile. The place name comes from Old High Tuotinwilari and means " farm estate of Tuoto ". In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Habsburg Office Meienberg.

1415 Lucerne conquered the Office Meienberg, but had to return in 1425 to the common possession of the Confederates. From the conquered territories outside the offices a Common rule were formed. At the beginning of the 15th century, the Lucerne family of moss had acquired the lower courts. In 1422 they sold it to the city of Lucerne, which was able to exert a great influence on the village, although it legally belonged to the common possession of the Confederates. In March 1798, the French invaded Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic. Dietwil was a municipality in the district of Muri of the short-lived Canton of Baden, since 1803 it belongs to the canton of Aargau.

During the special covenant war of 1848, which led to the founding of the Swiss Confederation, the Zurich had built in Dietwil their camp, as they advanced against Lucerne. Until well into the 20th century Dietwil remained a small village that lived mainly on farming. For many decades, the population stagnated. Attractions

Politics and Law
