Rubem Braga

Rubem Braga ( born January 12, 1913 in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Espírito Santo, † December 19, 1990 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian diplomat, lawyer, journalist and writer.

Life and work

Braga was the son of Francisco de Carvalho Braga and his wife Rachel Coelho Braga; the journalist Newton Braga (1911-1962) was his older brother.

Braga spent his early childhood in his hometown, but was brought to the school to relatives in Niterói (Rio de Janeiro). He studied law in Rio de Janeiro, but later moved in the same subject to Belo Horizonte ( Minas Gerais ), where he was able in 1932 to successfully complete this study.

Following this, Braga began to write Associados for various newspapers and magazines of the Diários. During his studies, he reported on the takeover of Getúlio Vargas. At the beginning of the Second World War, the Diário Carioca sent him as a correspondent for Italy. One of his main themes was of course the Força Expedicionária Brasileira FEB ( ). After the war, Braga returned with one of the first ships back to Brazil and settled in Rio de Janeiro.

His article because, often sparked controversy, Braga was detained under the President João Café Filho (1954 /55), Carlos Coimbra da Luz (1955) and Nereu Ramos (1955 /56) several times. Together with his colleague Otto Lara Resende and Fernando Sabino Braga founded in 1967 the publishing house Editora Sabiá; inter alia, to become independent publishers.

As Jânio Quadros was elected as President of Brazil, he sent Braga as a diplomat at the court of King Hassan II, Rabat (Morocco ). As Pascoal Ranieri Mazzilli did not renew this mandate, Braga returned to Brazil and was now working for Rede Globo.

Rubem Braga died 24 days before his 77th birthday on 19 December 1990 in Rio de Janeiro and found his final resting place. In honor of the brothers Braga Literature Museum Casa dos Braga was established in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim. In Cachoeiro de Itapemirim also the Teatro Municipal bears his name.

Reception

In addition to his journalistic work over the years was also an independent literary work, for which he was repeatedly praised by the audience as well as from the official criticism. In his work, O Conde eo Passarinho he was successful debut in 1936. Known and praised for today 's Braga for his short stories, which are very often first appeared in the feature pages or the literary supplement of various newspapers.
