Ruby Blue is the debut album by the Irish musician Róisín Murphy from the year 2005.

Formation

After Róisín Murphy and Mark Brydon had dissolved their common electronica duo Moloko, Murphy began working at Ruby Blue. For the album she could win as a producer Matthew Herbert, who is known for his Musique concrète - approaches.

After some of the titles recorded and the record company had been provided, this took the pieces not promising and asked Murphy to make the songs more accessible to the radio. These refused and replied that she " would like to have as pure as possible," the plate. The record company tolerated this later.

The well-established material was first published on three EPs with the titles Sequins 1, Sequins 2, and Sequins 3 each in January, February and May 2005 on 12 " vinyl records, before being housed together on a plate.

The cover comes from Simon Henwood, who dressed the singer after her wardrobe review in sequins and recorded. He described the figurative features Murphy as a " disco -electro- pop diva in the 1940s " look. Henwood led later directed the music videos of singles.

Compositions

Together on the plate is a mix of electronica and jazz of the early 1920s, a penchant Herberts. The instruments, mainly brass and woodwind instruments are placed on noise from, among others, an alarm clock, water dispenser and hair sprays. The lyrics are about Murphy's relationship with ex-boyfriend and fellow Moloko Mark Brydon, and later to Simon Henwood.

Chart positions

Murphy's debut album was less successful than her work with Moloko. The album reached # 80 in the Billboard European Top 100 Albums, and fell into the following week back out .. In the UK charts, it reached # 88 on the most successful it was in Belgium, where it climbed to number seven and 12 weeks in the Charts remained. In other Europe the plate reached the Top 40 in Finland as well as the Top 50 in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland. Reviews

The record received good reviews. Allmusic wrote that " the seductive sensuality Murphy and unpredictable quirks maintains that made ​​Moloko unique, without sounding warmed up". Pitchfork Media noted that " it is hardly possible that anyone could not think it possible that this was the best thing that Murphy would have ever made ."

Reception

Several songs were used in TV series, including Ruby Blue, Ramalama ( Bang Bang ), Love In The Making and Night Of The Dancing Flame in Grey's Anatomy. Two songs were used for the reality show So You Think You Can Dance. Ruby Blue was the theme song for MTV Italy talkshow Very Victoria Victoria Cabello.
