Hairy Ruellie ( Ruellia humilis )

The Hairy Ruellia ( Ruellia humilis ) is a species of the genus Ruellien ( Ruellia ) in the family of Acanthaceae ( Acanthaceae ). There are some known varieties.

Features

The Hairy Ruellie is a perennial, herbaceous plant or a dwarf shrub. It reaches heights of growth of 40 to 50 (80 ) cm. The stem is white to pubescent. The leaves are oblong to ovate, up to 15 inches long and up to 2.5 inches wide, sessile or short-stalked and ciliate at the edge.

The sepals are linear and up to 2.5 inches long. The crown is purple to blue in color, rarely white, and up to 8 inches long.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

Occurrence

The Hairy Ruellie occurs in warm to hot temperate eastern North America to medium on dry slopes and in open woods.

Use

The Hairy Ruellie is rarely used as an ornamental plant in borders, natural gardens and copses.
