History

The first section of Putbus to Binz, which is still in operation today, was opened in 1895. The operator, which has acted at that time as Rügensche small train -Aktiengesellschaft ( RüKB ), extended its network to 1899 to 97.3 kilometers. A line ran from the station Altefaehr, opposite Stralsund, Putbus to Göhren. The other route led from the Old churches, near the Cape Arkona, Wittower on the ferry to Bergen. In the late 1960s, most sections were shut down.

Were built the routes of the Rügenscher small railway corporation RüKB where the construction companies Lenz & Co. had a weighty share of the share capital. Lenz & Co. first took over the management. As of April 1, 1910 this was taken over by the Provincial Association of the Province of Pomerania.

1935 promoted the RüKB 311 776 persons and 175 984 tonnes of freight.

1940 took over the newly established as a public corporation Pomeranian tracks the Rügensche small railway corporation in their property.

After 1945, the line was all private sidings in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern subordinated to the State Railway Office Demmin. On April 1, 1949, the routes were taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn.

With a track renewal between 1977 and 1979 the route Putbus -Göhrendorf was equipped with superstructure K and mostly rail type S 33. With new renovations to the early nineties rails of the form S 49 were laid and the gravel replaced by lagestabilere ballast.

On 1 January 1996, the operation of the remaining route went from of the reorganized Deutsche Bahn AG to the newly founded Rügen narrow gauge railway GmbH & Co., which at that time belonged to the railway company Karsdorfer KEG.

Following the insolvency of Karsdorfer railway company whose CEO Bernhard van Engelen sold him personally owned RüKB in March 2004 to the railway operating company ( EBG ) by Ludger Guttwein. A dispute over the purchase price and on the continuation of the operation meant that the contract was canceled in May 2004. In November 2004, the RüKB was eventually sold to Hermann Schöntag.

Since the transport company Mecklenburg -Vorpommern the traffic contract for legal reasons did not want to renew and instead had re-tendered the services on the route transport services in the fall of 2007, ended December 31, 2007, the obligation to perform the RüKB. The procedure was for the benefit of railway construction Operating Company Pressnitztalbahn mbH from ( PRESS ) to operate the Orlando Furioso 20 years. The new contract provides that the new operating company receives the infrastructure for the operation of a loan from county Vorpommern - Rügen.

Because of disputes of the district of Rügen with the former operator with respect to the repurchase of the vehicle fleet consisted since 18 March 2008, a transitional operation between Binz and Göhren with rented by the PRESS vehicles. On 9 April 2008 the PRESS got the power to dispose of the repurchased vehicles. Since April 26, 2008, the train runs again in the two-hour clock with two trains between Putbus and Göhren. On 1 June 2008, she took over the employees and the railway infrastructure of the RüKB. Since 7 June 2008, the RüBB uses a third train between Binz and Göhren, so there an hourly service is realized.

The track opened up especially the regional agricultural hinterland of the island of Rügen and had the boat trips on the island of Rügen no meaning. As a special feature existed between Wittower ferry and Fährhof a rail ferry that served the road. Were used, the built ferries Wittow 1896 and 1911 built Jaspar of Maltzhahn ( from 1945 Bergen). Was used the ferry only for freight and for the transfer of locomotives and cars, in passenger trains no cars were ferried. The acronym "LB" behind the station name Putbus and Binz stands for " Regional Railways ".

Plans to extend the route there were several realized, was ultimately only the branch on the bow for military reasons. Already approved route projects such as the extension route to Cape Arkona and from Trent to Schaprode were not finally established. Also the connection of Bubkevitz Garz, 1907 was approved, not built, although the connection between the two routes would certainly have brought tremendous operational benefits on Rügen.

In the 1960s, the route for freight lost its importance as more and more transports went on the road. On September 10, 1968, operating on the northern route Fährhof - old churches was set on January 19, 1970 also ended the traffic on the route Bergen- Wittower ferry. The branch to the bug peninsula was finally discontinued in 1955.

The ferry service between Wittower ferry and Fährhof remained until 1975 owned by the Deutsche Reichsbahn and then went over to the White Fleet. Only in the 1990s, the old railway ferries were decommissioned and replaced by new buildings.

Since 1998 also the coming of the German Federal Railways V 51 901 drives in Rügen.

In Rügenscher narrow gauge network was used from the beginning to Görlitz weight brake. 1965 began the conversion to compressed air brake. Unlike many other narrow gauge lines, the line couplings on the vehicles are arranged symmetrically. Since the original machine had no Heizkupplungen, the cars had to be equipped with stoves. Also since the 1960s by Saxon routes converted cars were retrofitted with ovens. From the beginning the Balancierhebelkupplung used. Operation with rolling vehicles, it never existed.
