Ruifang District

Ruifang (Chinese瑞芳 区, pinyin Ruifang Qū, PEH oē - jī Sui -hong ) is a district of the city of New Taipei City in northern Taiwan, Republic of China.

Location

Ruifang is located on the northeastern edge of the city of New Taipei City. Its northern border is the East China Sea, bordered to the south Ruifang to its neighboring districts Gongliao, Shuangxi and Pingxi and in the west to the city of Keelung. The largely hilly terrain of the district is the northern foothills of the Taiwanese Central Mountains dar. Ruifang is drained by the river Keelung.

History and Sights

The originally isolated and sparsely populated area gained economic importance to the period of Japanese rule over Taiwan by treasure finds. From the early 20th century gold, copper and coal were mined here. To transport the wealth of the town was connected to the railway network. The place name " Ruifang " was originally the name of a grocery store on the Keelung River, which was to supply the mostly working in the mines inhabitants of great importance and eventually the whole place got its name.

After the Second World War, the mining resource fields become depleted and the mining was stopped. The closed conveyor systems and factories are now a tourist attraction and made ​​partially accessible to the public as museums. On the history of gold mining remembers the Gold Museum of Ruifang.
