Shuangxi District

Shuangxi (Chinese双溪 区, pinyin shuangxi Qū, PEH oē - jī Siang - khe ) is a district of the city of New Taipei City in northern Taiwan, Republic of China.

Location

Shuangxi lies to the east of the city of New Taipei City. Its neighboring districts are Pingxi in the west, to the north and Ruifang Gongliao in the east; the south of the district borders the Yilan County. The largely hilly to mountainous country Chat is drained by the Beishi the north by the river Shuangxi, in the south.

History and Significance

The originally populated by indigenous people of the area today Shuangxi was briefly during the first half of the 17th century as well as other parts of Northern Taiwan under the influence of Spain and the Netherlands, the bases here talking ( see Article Taiwanese history ). The colonization of the area by Chinese immigrants began at the end of the 18th century. Because the mountainous landscape only conditionally permitted agriculture, the population remained low. After the discovery of coal deposits Shuangxi acquired at the beginning of the 20th century caused by coal mining of some economic importance, which was lost with the depletion of coal inventories again after the Second World War.

Today Shuangxi is one of the most sparsely populated districts of New Taipei, and thanks to its partially picturesque landscape, a popular excursion and recreation destination in the greater Taipei area.
