RuneQuest

RuneQuest is a fantasy role-playing game that was first released in 1978 by the Californian company Chaosium.

History

1979 came out a second edition. 1984, the 3rd edition of RuneQuest was published by the company Avalon Hill, but further developed by Chaosium. In German, the third edition of the publishing world of the games has been sold since 1991, but lost the rights to do so.

Since it was divided by the fan base and Chaosium and the publisher Avalon Hill whether RuneQuest remain permanently linked to the fantasy game world Glorantha or open should be designed and hardly any new products reached the market, the system mid-90s lost more and more popularity. 1997 Avalon Hill wanted, on their own, without the involvement of Chaosium, the revised RuneQuest Slayers are published, but this was not it, since the takeover negotiations Avalon Hill Hasbro and exposing the Veröffentlungstermin. RuneQuest Slayers can now be downloaded under the title Runeslayers as freeware.

Mongoose Publishing has released the bulk of the rules of 4th Edition as a freely available System_Reference_Document (SRD ) in English. In this way it is possible interested manufacturers of game worlds and adventures to use the rules from RuneQuest for their purposes, free of charge. Interested parties can learn about free of charge with the RuneQuest SRD and use as a digital reference work.

In January 2010, Mongoose Publishing has released RuneQuest II. The collaboration between Mongoose and Issaries was dissolved again in May 2011 and the basic rules are - detached from the game world Glorantha and the name RuneQuest - newly redistributed under the name Legend.

A sixth edition was published in July 2012 at The Design Mechanism.

Control system

RuneQuest uses the Basic Role-Playing Rules and Regulations, which forms the basis of role-playing games such as Call of Cthulhu, Stormbringer, Hawkmoon, Corum, Worlds of Wonder, Super World, ElfQuest or Ringworld.

One of the core mechanisms include the following:

  • A purely skills -based player character, ie there are no classes and levels
  • Actions are carried out based on a percentage system, ie the use of a skill for example, has a certain percentage chance of success
  • Universal magic system ( divided into shamanistic, divine and hermetic magic ) in which each character can learn and cast spells
  • Direct experience acquisition, ie as soon as a skill has been successfully used, there is a chance to improve
